South Australia education system enhances learning with safe AI chatbot
South Australia's Department for Education developed and trialed EdChat, an AI-powered chatbot for students and educators, using Azure OpenAI Service and Azure AI Content Safety. EdChat was introduced to empower safe, ethical use of generative AI in schools, stimulate critical and creative thinking, and provide 24/7 access to educational information and guidance. The initial eight-week trial involved over 1,500 students and 150 educators across eight schools, allowing extensive real-world testing of AI for learning support, content generation, and metacognitive development. Insight Enterprises partnered with the Department on deployment and interface design. Privacy and safety were ensured using Microsoft Cloud's security features and Azure AI Content Safety. All data remained within the department's private tenancy. EdChat's introduction led to increased engagement, confidence with AI tools, support for differentiated learning, and positive feedback from students and teachers with plans to expand statewide.
