Kenya Drives Digital Innovation With Green Data Center and AI Skilling

Microsoft and G42 announced the largest single private-sector investment in Kenya's digital infrastructure, committing $1 billion to accelerate digital transformation across East Africa. The collaboration will result in the construction of a state-of-the-art, geothermal-powered data center campus in Olkaria, Kenya, set to operate as the East Africa Cloud Region on Microsoft Azure. This initiative includes the development of local-language AI models, the establishment of an East Africa Innovation Lab, and broad AI skills training programs to foster a future-ready workforce. In partnership with Kenyan governmental and educational institutions, G42 and Microsoft will drive research and train AI models in Swahili and English, furthering advanced research and AI applications tailored to the region's culture and needs. The Microsoft AI for Good Lab in Nairobi will collaborate with local organizations on environmental and societal solutions, such as enhancing food security and climate resilience with AI-powered data insights. Connectivity investments will expand marine and terrestrial fiber infrastructure, improve rural and urban internet access, and partner with regional organizations like Mawingu Networks and M-KOPA to close the digital divide. The initiative will also introduce a trusted data zone framework for secure, locally governed cloud services and support Kenya's cloud-first government adoption. AI, digital, and cybersecurity skilling programs will be offered to government employees, young entrepreneurs, and university students, fostering inclusive economic participation. The comprehensive strategy is supported by broad collaboration across local universities, global tech partners, and regional private sector alliances. Use cases include AI-driven agricultural productivity optimization, reduction of water risk with satellite data analytics, and disaster response improvements using high-resolution AI-powered monitoring tools.
