OCP Africa empowers smallholder farmers through digital agriculture platform

OCP Africa, a major fertilizer supplier on the continent, partnered with Microsoft to rapidly scale its Digital Agriculture Platform, aiming to directly benefit smallholder farmers and agri-dealers across Africa. The project targets critical challenges in African agriculture such as food insecurity, the need for better stakeholder communication, increased resilience to climate events, and the modernization of farming practices. Through the partnership, OCP Africa leverages Microsoft's cloud, AI, and big data capabilities to enhance farmer access to information, services, and agronomic support, integrating precision agriculture and skilling into rural communities. The initiative operates at continental scale, with ambitions to expand digital services and precision farming to millions of farmers by 2025. Key components include partnership with African AgriTech startups, deployment of Agri Data Platforms, use of machine learning and AI Foundry to boost operational efficiency, and offering new digitally-enabled services tailored to soil and crop needs. The result is expected to be improved food security, increased agricultural productivity, reduced post-harvest losses, and the empowerment of rural farmers through better access to technology, equipment, and finance.
