Women Farmers in Kenya Leverage AI to Boost Crop Yields and Resilience

In Kenya, women comprise 80% of the smallholder farmer workforce, yet have traditionally struggled with limited access to real-time data, agronomic insights, and affordable digital solutions. Microsoft FarmBeats, a blend of AI, IoT sensors, and cloud technology, was deployed to deliver data-driven recommendations and accessible mobile tools tailored to rural women farmers. The platform aggregates information from drones, sensors, and satellite imagery to generate actionable insights about soil health, irrigation, and crop management. By providing recommendations via mobile apps in local languages and supporting inclusion through women-focused extension programs, FarmBeats directly addresses digital gender divides in rural farming communities. The project demonstrates measurable improvements in crop yields, crop health, and cost efficiency. As a result, farmers are better equipped to make data-informed planting, fertilization, and harvesting decisions, while new AI-enhanced microinsurance reduces financial risk due to extreme weather events. Despite persistent barriers in digital literacy and access, FarmBeats is promoting climate resilience and economic empowerment for rural women in Kenya, turning technology into a leveling force in agriculture.
