Ministry of Education transforms national curriculum with AI integration

The Ministry of Education in Sri Lanka partnered with Microsoft to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) into the country's national school curriculum. The collaboration kicked off with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the Presidential Secretariat in March 2024. To facilitate this transformation, Microsoft will provide the Microsoft 365 platform, serving as a secure hub for communication and collaboration among students and teachers. Microsoft Education teams, together with Sri Lanka's National Institute of Education, have co-developed a new AI curriculum. This pilot program will initially be rolled out to twenty schools across the nation's nine provinces using a 'train the trainer' model to rapidly scale reach and impact. The goal is to democratize AI, ensuring both students and educators acquire future-ready skills. The project reflects the Ministry's commitment to a digital-first, future-oriented educational system that empowers the next generation. The outcomes are expected to serve as a blueprint for nationwide scaling, fundamentally updating the educational landscape and preparing students for a technology-driven world. The project was marked by the presence of international dignitaries and demonstrates a milestone in national education, focusing on real-world skills and transformation.
